  • Disaster Safety Plans For Your Animals

With the world in turmoil and experiencing disaster after disaster, whether it be man-made or Mother Nature, you should always have an emergency plan.  These few steps can help save their lives so they can continue to make your lives happier.

Prepare Beforehand and Be Safe Afterwards
Although every disaster isn't the same, your preparation can be similar in each case.  If you plan ahead, you may be able to take your pets out of the equation altogether.  By asking yourself these simple questions, you can have a much better chance of saving ALL of your family members when needed.

    1.  Do I have a safe place for my pet to go?
The Red Cross shelters will not be a good place to plan to keep your pets.  Red Cross is not able to allow pets into the shelters unless they are service animals assisting people with disabilities because of state safety and health regulations.  Also, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to find shelter for your pets during or shortly after a disaster, so by planning ahead you can improve your chances.

  • Fire Safety for Your Pets

Losing a loved one is always difficult.  Losing a pet is no different.  For the majority of us, pets are members of our family.  It does not matter if they have four legs, feathers, swim or hop; pets are as much a part of our every day lives as our children are.  In fact, in some homes where the now adult children have grown and moved away, or there are no children to start with, pets can and do become surrogate children.

As youngsters in elementary school, we are taught various things about fire safety.  However, never do I remember being taught how to keep our pets safe.  I learned about having a fire safety plan which should include where to meet up with other members of the family, and what items should be prior to "grab a hold of" as your leaving the house if there is time to do so safely.  But what about our babies?  Those four legged, winged and furry friends that live with us? Does your fire safety plan include an escape plan for the family pets?
